Dr. Bob Weil Running Tips

Winter has arrived like your loud uncle at a wedding reception; you try to grin and bear it, knowing it won’t last forever.

For the fitness enthusiast, training outdoors can be a challenge to stay comfortable and safe while still putting in the work you had in mind.

To help make your workouts more enjoyable, I’m passing on some tips from my interview with Dr. Bob Weil on my Run With It TV show.

Dr. Weil is a Sports Podiatrist and host of Sports Doctor radio in Chicago.

Before leaving the comfort of home, Dr. Weil says, “We have to think about things like warming up properly, not running right out the door and getting involved too early and causing problems. We want to pay attention to dressing properly.”

Dressing in layers is the key to staying comfortable and enjoying your workouts.

To avoid slipping on snow while running, Dr. Weil says, “Most important is (having good) traction.

He recommends wearing runners or hiking boots with excellent tread or even adding a metal cleat apparatus (ice cleats), especially for dealing with snow and  black ice.”

Also, wearing well-insulated gloves is essential to safety and comfort during winter workouts.

To recap, dress in layers, have good traction and be visible.

Also, check the weather conditions before heading out. Tell someone where you are going. Carry ID and bring a cell phone with you.  Be safe!
