Trinity Western right side Blake Scheerhoorn helped Canada to an eighth place finish at the FIVB U21 World Championships in Mexico to cap an eventful summer that saw him represent his country in three international tournaments.
Scheehoorn collected 35 kills and three aces over the course of the U21 World Championships, where Canada’s eighth place finish was a marked improvement on its 12th place result in 2013. After posting a 2-4 record in pool play, including wins over Egypt and Mexico, Canada lost to Slovenia in the seventh place match.
Overall, head coach John Barrett was pleased with his team’s final ranking despite facing challenging matches against top volleyball nations such as Italy, Russia and China.
“Our final ranking within the top eight is somewhere we wanted to be,” Barrett said. “Our technical difficulties in the second round left us with the inability to show our best volleyball.
This leaves us with the reality of the amount of quality work that must be done to catch up with other teams of the world.
“The team worked very hard and diligently over a long summer, and I’m sure these young men have grown in a number of ways.”
He continued I’m very proud of the way they conducted themselves, as it’s always an honour to represent your country and wear the Maple Leaf.”
The eighth place finish at the U21 World Championships wraps up a summer that also saw Scheerhoorn and his Canadian teammates win a bronze medal at the U21 Pan American Cup in Gatineau and finish 19th overall at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea.
