Worth The Money?

The fight of the century as it was dubbed by many was nothing more than a money scheme for individuals who are paid far too much.

Not just for those attending the event, but for those who spent money on the pay-per-view event that seemed to be a complete waste of time and the betting odds.

Well that is unless you are involved in the boxing community that seems to garner enormous amounts of cash only to realize when all is said and done – there will be a rematch.

It’s been a short six years since Mayweather and Pacquiao should have fought (originally) but with the anticipation and hype for Saturday’s event one might say we were robbed of a fight that lived up to the hype that was placed on it.

At the age of 36 Pacquiao (5 ft 6 1/2 in) he has a record of 3-2 in his last five bouts and is considered the “old man” entering this fight.

The other corner saw Mayweather “The money man” enter the fight standing 5 ft 8 ins and 146 lbs with a record of 47-0 on 26 KO’s.

So for the normal person it seemed that the undefeated champion was looking to break Rocky Marciano’s record of 49-0.

While this could be possible he isn’t in the same class as Marciano as he lacks what is needed – personality and charm.

Oh yea he does have the fascination that attracts many, cause they are drawn to money and glory, something he might never achieve.

For whatever reason everyone seemed to ignore his past record of spousal abuse as everyone wanted the fight to be like watching Ali, but that’ll never happen.

This hardly brought back the memories of Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Sugar Ray, The Hitman or even Hagler.

We were hoping that Manny’s reach would instantly become longer and that Floyd wouldn’t be content to let one or two power punches give him rounds.

The noise (whoosh) made by Pacquiao’s several missed punches, the crowd noise that followed along with the beer vendors pausing to catch a glimpse of the action, in the end was all lost.

The PPV button should have said “Truth or Dare” as many I spoke to saw this fight as something they won’t buy into again.

You can only fool people for so long and by the third round, I think everyone knew that Mayweather was only playing defense for the remaining nine rounds to follow.

By the seventh, it seemed obvious to many that Pacquiao wasn’t going to deliver the big “KO” punch to pull of the win.

While the end result saw Mayweather as the winner and Pacquiao losing, but in the end we all lost to what could have been one of the best matches of this century – not the last century.

At the cost of $99.95, was it really worth it, even if you could claim it as a tax write-off for clients?

Pro boxing continues to have us think, it’s still around and they can supply quality matches, but if they believe this, they are the only ones!

If you want to get you money’s worth, drop in at your local gym and catch any Amateur bout and you will at least come away with the satisfaction of knowing you weren’t cheated.

Boxing at this level is dead, but having a friend involved in the sport, he might tell you different, so now it’s up to us to grab him for an interview on this subject.

Wait till next installment to find out. Oh yea his site is http://www.gerrygionco.com/
