So once again we see a “so-called” superstar in the world of sports act like a child and truth be know, kids probably act better than several pro’s.
Before I give you my answer to that question, lets define some terms and when I say “argue”, I literally mean to complain to the referee/official about a call they’ve made.
Not just intellectual disagreement but a loud shouting voiced complaint usually accompanied by prolonged anger, frustration and in some cases physical abuse.
So, with that in mind, let me answer the question: When is it right to argue with referees/officials?
If we start at the root of this one has to ask, where or who teaches them that abuse from one person to another is allowed in any sport – let alone at the pro level?
To get to the crutch of the matter let’s remember that today’s athletes are paid far too much for what they do to “apparently” entertain the fans.
Right or wrong look at the starting salary of different sports such as the NHL, CFL or NFL and MLB to name only three.
First let’s understand that the pro leagues won’t tighten this up as it’s about money and attracting fans to the games but mostly the about revenue made during the playoffs – they seem to use a different rule book!
Most recently we have seen Serena Williams act like a two-year old (actually they act better) as she thought (?) the call the umpire made during the US Open was wrong.
In discus she launched a verbal attack on an umpire during the U.S. Open final, calling her ‘unattractive inside’ and a loser – and she’s been fined $2,000 over it.
The American had received a code violation for yelling ‘come on’ after battling to hang on to her serve during the start of her second set against Samantha Stosur yesterday.
The ball had not yet reached the Australian and, under grand slam rules, a deliberate hindrance, such as an intentional shout during a point, sees the perpetrator lose the point.
This not the first as this incident follows her infamous verbal attack on a lineswoman which cost her a point penalty and her US Open semi-final against Kim Clijsters in 2009.
During that she was fined and is still playing under a two-year suspended ban this year, but it seems nothing has changed in her world of being abusive or spoiled rotten.
Is this the way in which she was raised and in truth, I guess we will really never know unless she writes a best seller book on “how to abuse officials and get away with it. Might just be a good read!!
So again she showed utter disregard to umpire Eva Asderaki and when she asked for a replay, she was refused and she continued her titrate saying “Aren’t you the one that screwed me over last time here? Yeah you are.
‘Seriously, you have it out for me? ‘I promise you, that’s not cool. That’s totally not cool. ‘I truly despise you.”
So let’s think of words to best describe her as to her most recent ongoing abuse towards officials might be – spoiled, childish, juvenile, and maybe even callow.
And we wonder where today’s youth get this from? Do we really have to say!!!
She the draw and according to Forbes she is worth $24.6 Million at the age of 34 and if you’re interested she is single.
Just once I would pay to watch her have the roles reversed where she was getting the abuse thrown at her.
Oh yea the name for this abuse is reviling or ” verbal bullying” and can be found in Wikipedia.
