UBC Sports Action

The Action on the court and on the Ice for UBC took place as the Men’s Basketball team tried to secure a position for the CIS West Final four with a 68-61 win over UFV the University of Fraser Valley to reach the gold medal game.

In the other match the University of Victoria posted a 72-59 win over Winnipeg to advance and face UBC in the gold medal match on Saturday afternoon at War memorial Gym.

The Women’s hockey team along with the Calgary Dinos are heading to the National finals in Toronto March 8-10. UBC’s women’s team took on the Dinos for the Canada West Finals and fell short of the opening game of the best of here losing by a score of 4-1.

The teams continues their weekend series (tonight) in Calgary and if the T-Birds pull out a win and even the series they would force a third and deciding game Sunday afternoon in Calgary.

The Dinos opened up a 2-0 lead on the T-Birds on goals by Mitschke, and Morgan on the PP giving them a 2-0 lead after the opening period.

They increased the lead to 3-0 in the second off the stick of Wickenheiser in what proved to be the insurance goal for her team with less than 6 minutes left in the middle period.

UBC got on the board in the final period as Saxvik scored cutting the lead to 3-1 with 8:44 remaining. The Dinos “D” played strong shut them down the remainder of the contest, but did see Gavrukiva add an insurance goal with 4:19 left giving Calgary a 4-1 lead.

Shots in the game were 24-23 for UBC as Dinos goalkeeper Amanda Tapp was solid with 23 saves in the win for Calgary.

UBC “tender” Daniel Dube stopped 19 of 23 shots in the loss for the T-Birds.

Game two goes tonight in Calgary and the T-Birds pull out a victory they would even the series at a game apiece and set-up a third and deciding game to decide the 2012-13 CIS Western Champions.

Basketball

In basketball “T-birds” are looking to advance to the National finals with a Gold Medal match-up against the U of Victoria.

The Bronze Medal match has the University of Fraser Valley taking on Winnipeg at 8:00pm.

Last night the “Birds” Men’s basketball team defeated the U of Fraser Valley 68-61 advancing to today’s Gold Medal game.
