Sarah Hunter Moving Up

Received this from Tennis Canada and noticed that good friend Sarah Hunter is competing in it and we wish her and our Canadian team all the best.

The Canadian quad team has arrived in Antalya, Turkey ahead of the 2015 BNP Paribas World Team Cup and is currently in the midst of final preparations before the tournament commences at Club Alibey Manavgat on Monday.

Featuring former world No. 2 Sarah Hunter (Surrey, BC), current world No. 26 Gary Luker (Stoney Creek, Ont.) and No. 47 Rob Shaw (North Bay, Ont.), the squad is aiming for a fifth-place finish or higher, which would match its result from a year ago.

“We’re really excited to be back at Club Alibey,” Luker said. “We’ve got a great team and I’m looking forward to some tough competition.”

Among the top countries in the event are defending champion Great Britain and the United States.

Shaw who is playing in the tournament for the first time told the media “After a long flight and bus ride, arriving at the World Team Cup destination proved worth it.”

“The tennis facility is truly something to marvel at. We had a great first day of training getting used to the red clay and I can’t wait for competition to begin on Monday!”

The draw to determine the round-robin pools will take place on Sunday.

The quad competition will feature two groups of eight nations, with the top two teams in each pool advancing into the semifinals and all the action will run from May 25-31.

The BNP Paribas World Team Cup is the wheelchair tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Fed Cup.

There are divisions for men, women, quads, and juniors, and it is held annually with a different nation playing host each year.

Sarah is known as “The Hunter” and is considered one of the best wheelchair tennis players in the world.

She represented Canada in Athens in 2004, is a seven-time Quad National champion, a recipient of the Tennis Canada Most Valuable Wheelchair Player Award (2007) and is member of the ITF Athlete’s Commission.
