“On Your Mark Fitness Tips”

Hello Readers

In today’s article  lets explore the benefits of introducing  EPOC training to my client and why it is very beneficial to his weight reduction goal setting.

Once again we are training our 55 year old golf pro who has successfully made the Toronto Maple Leafs Spring Golf Team after a winter of serious training and going to the gym.

He has now decided to hire a trainer to see if he can reach a new set of goals to help get him from the Golf team to the Maple Leafs Alumni Hockey Team.

He has been cleared to train at a higher intensity by our own busy french fitness appraiser.

A stress test was performed and the results showed that our participant was indeed very stressed out mentally but his heart was was in good shape to push harder.

3 Workouts a day for EPOC benefits.

The Exercise Physiology Laboratory at Purdue University found that high intensity training increases post-exercise energy expenditure through increased metabolism in Post Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC).

This “after burning” effect on calories (and fat) works because the oxygen requirements of exercise were not met during high intensity training.

It means that when you’ve finished at the gym and are sitting at home, there are millions of physiological reactions occurring in the body requiring calories, hence the increased metabolism.

So what did EPOC mean to our Athlete whose eyes are rolling around trying to comprehend the benefits of training 3 times a day versus once.

His desk job allowed him to get a 25 min higher intensity cardio workout at home before work, a 20 min higher intensity full body workout in the small gym at work at lunch time.

The evening was free to go for a bike ride that lasted more than 20 mins.

EPOC doesn’t occur with slow, steady-state aerobic exercise. In that case, the oxygen demands of the body are met during training. Meaning you only burn calories for the period you’re training.

Training 3 times a day at higher intensities has allowed my clients body to be utilizing oxygen at a higher rate for a period of up to 2 hours after exercising.

That means his metabolism  is fired up for up to 6 hrs a day vs maybe 2 hours when only working out one time a day. Wow burning calories after the workout is over… Makes sense to the come back kid.

By introducing EPOC training to my athlete who is also firing up his metabolism by eating more often and smaller amounts we have been able to achieve a more toned ,efficient and less cumbersome  Maple Leaf.
