Fighting A Battle

The 10th Annual Rock for Dimes fund raising was held February 26th in Vancouver at the Red-Room Ultra Lounge in Vancouver with the March of Dimes spokesman former  pro-WWE Wrestler and Hall of Famer Brett Hart.hart 1

He (Brett) had suffered a stroke in 2002 and was greatly assisted by the March of Dimes who helped him in various ways to better his life.

The event raised money to assist victims to help get their lives back and integrate them within the community.

This includes such things as speech communication, getting back to work, back in their homes and also to be able to walk again.

The March of Dimes was started in 1934 mainly to help those victims with Polio in the early thirties to help find a cure.

Eventually they expanded the research to assist victims who have also suffered Strokes.

The Event was held at the Red-Room and featured five (5) bands that performed to an over flow crowd.

Money raised from the night’s admission and the 50/50 draw also included an autographed guitar signed by the legendary Canadian wrestler.

Brett Hart has been a spokesman for the March of Dimes since 2007 and is now living a life that otherwise would have been difficult if not for the care of this great organization.

He mentioned “What they have done not only for me, but countless others speaks volumes and for that I am truly grateful.

Special Guests were Craig Northey a graduate of Simon Fraser University Communications and in addition he is a Canadian musician and film/composer.

He is one of the founding members of the Odds band and recently it was announced that he will be composing music for the Corner Gas movie.

He is a huge hockey fan and when time permits skates with the Vancouver Canuck Alumni.

Another special guest was retired NHL’er Gary Nylund who played 608 games in Pro hockey until his career ended in 1993.

His playing days including spending time with 4 NHL teams (Toronto, Chicago, New York Islanders and the Vancouver Canucks) and still skates with the Canucks Alumni.

Today Gary is a Delta firefighter and received the medal of Bravery and the National Governor General’s Decoration of Bravery.

The five bands that rocked the night were exceptional and the best band was awarded a trophy by a by panel of judges.

These included Kieran Wilkie MC and on-air personality (96.9 Jack FM), Dave Genn (musician) 54-40, Jeff Dawson (Producer), Sheila Lee (Music Therapist Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund), Pat Steward (Drummer) The Odds and Yan Joseph (Actor/Host).

Dave Genn spent six years with the Matthew Good Band from 1995-2001 and was the band’s lead guitarist/keyboard as well as co-writing many of the band’s songs with Matthew Good.

Besides the prizes from the 50/50 and others that were won the big winner was Haley Graham; a stroke victim herself who was awarded a $15,000.00 to up-grade her Wheelchair.

This was March of Dimes “retrofitting a ride” and the award was granted by Istvan and Barbra Hass Assistive Devices and Vehicle Retrofit Initiative for the March of Dimes Canada.
