Duo Combined For 10 Gold Medals

The UBC Thunderbirds’ Coleman Allen and Savannah King were named the Canada West 1^st Stars of the Week for their record-breaking performances at the conference Swimming Championships at the University of Lethbridge over the weekend.

Allen racked up six gold medals and one silver medal while setting three individual Canada West records, while King added four gold medals and one bronze medal.  The pair led their respective squads to the conference titles – second straight for the men and sixth in a row for the women.

Also honoured this week are Calgary Dinos hockey forward Elgin Pearce and Winnipeg Wesmen basketball forward Jelane Pryce for the men, and Manitoba Bisons hockey goaltender Rachel Dyck and Regina Cougars basketball guard Kehlsie Crone for the women.

MEN

1^st Star: Coleman Allen, UBC (Swimming)

For a third straight year, UBC’s Coleman Allen was named the Canada West Male Swimmer of the Meet at the Canada West Swimming Championship in Lethbridge, leading the Thunderbirds to the 15^th Canada West title in the program’s history.

Over the three-day event, the fourth-year student-athlete from Spokane, Washington set three individual Canada West records in the 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly, and 100m backstroke.

He also was part of a record-setting relay team for UBC in the 4x200m freestyle relay. Other gold medals for Allen came in the 4x100m freestyle relay, and the 4x100m medley relay. He also won a silver medal in the 200m freestyle.

It was a record-setting weekend for the UBC men’s swim team. Allen, along with his teammates, became the first men’s team to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau. The UBC Thunderbirds finished with 1,000 points, 360 points more than second place Alberta.

Allen and the Thunderbirds will go in search of UBC’s first CIS men’s swimming championships since 2012, February 19-21 in Victoria, BC.

2^nd Star: #8 Elgin Pearce, Calgary (Hockey)

The No. 7 Calgary Dinos shocked the conference when they swept the No. 1 Alberta Golden Bears over the weekend with 5-3 and 2-1 wins. This marked the first time Alberta has been swept since October 19-20, 2012.

On Friday night in front of a home crowd, Elgin Pearce was a force to be reckoned with. The second-year forward recorded his first point of the night with an assist on the opening goal of the game.

Pearce later scored a hat trick in just one period, including the eventual game-winner. His fourth game came in the third period on an empty netter.

Pearce had a +5 rating on Friday and a +1 rating on Saturday.

The Dinos finish off the first half of the season against the UBC Thunderbirds when they host them at Father David Bauer Arena, November 28-29.

3^rd Star: #7 Jelane Pryce, Winnipeg (Basketball)

Fourth-year forward Jelane Pryce was instrumental in leading the Winnipeg Wesmen Men’s Basketball program to their first ever sweep over the UBC Thunderbirds this past weekend in Winnipeg.

In Friday’s 90-81 victory to open the weekend series, Pryce scored 25 points and hauled in 10 rebounds (both game-highs) to complete his third consecutive double-double.

The 6-7 forward was on fire from the field connecting on 11-of-16 (69%) shots.

He was finished the contest with a pair of blocks.

On Saturday night, Pryce was even better in leading the Wesmen to a 77-67 victory to complete the history-making sweep. He scored a game-high 32 points, was 11-of-14 (79%) from the field, hauled in five rebounds and also contributed two blocks.

Pryce was also on fire from the outside draining four-of-five three point attempts.

Pryce is currently eighth in Canada West Men’s Basketball scoring averaging 17.9 ppg.

The Wesmen currently at 5-3 will have the bye this week in conference play and Winnipeg will next be in conference action on January 9-10 as they play host to the Alberta Golden Bears.

WOMEN

1^st Star: Savannah King, UBC (Swimming)

For a fourth straight year UBC’s Savannah King from Vernon was named the Canada West Female Swimmer of the Meet at the Canada West Swimming Championship in Lethbridge.

She led the Thunderbirds to a sixth straight Canada West title and the 26^th all-time in the program’s history.

Swimming in her final Canada West Championships, the fifth-year Kinesiology student dominated the distance freestyle events, winning gold in the 200m, 400m, and 800m freestyle as well as another gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay and also won a Bronze Medal in the 200m backstroke.

Over her five-year career at the Canada West Championship she won both the 400m and 800m freestyle every single year and finished with 20 gold medals, two silver medals and two Bronze medals in her five years.

Sunday marked the sixth straight Canada West Championship for the Thunderbirds as they finished the three-day event with 1,059 points, 409 more points than second place Calgary.
