Delta’s Markus Thornmeyer Grabs Bronze

Some do it year round, while others only feel like it’s a summer sport, but regardless Canada’s Swim Team is showing off their talent at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championship, while putting Canada on the map at the same time.

Matthew Ackman managed a PB to win the silver medal in the men’s 100-m breaststroke on Thursday night at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships.

Delta’s Markus Thormeyer grabbed Bronze in the men’s 100-m freestyle for his second medal of the competition.

In the men’s 100-m breaststroke, Connor Hoppe of the U.S. was the winner in one minute and 01.68 seconds. Ackman tied for second in 1:02.05 with Ryuya Mura of Japan. James Guest of Pointe-Claire was fifth.

Ackman only started to race the breaststroke 10 months ago. He clocked the fastest time in the morning preliminaries at 1:01.85.

In the men’s 100-m freestyle, Paul Powers led the U.S. to a 1-2 finish in 50.29. Blake Pieroni was second in 50.30 and Thormeyer was third in a personal best 50.40. Mitchell Ferraro of Uxbridge, Ont., was seventh.

“In the final I didn’t hesitate at the turn and that made a big difference,” said Thormeyer, 16, third in the 100-m backstroke on Wednesday in Canadian age group record time.

There were also four fourth place finishes for Canada.

Mary-Sophie Harvey of Trois-Rivieres, Que., took fourth in the women’s 400-m individual medley; Tristan Cote of Etobicoke, Ont., was fourth and Robert Hill of North Vancouver seventh in the men’s 400 IM and both Canadian 4X200-m freestyle relays were fourth.

The swimmers for the women were Alexandra Aitchison, Alexandra Buscher, Danica Ludlow of Victoria and Harvey. For the men it was Peter Brothers of Victoria, Thormeyer, Ackman and Cote.
Kelsey Wog of Winnipeg and Genevieve Robertson of Guelph, Ont., we’re fifth and sixth in the women’s 100-m breaststroke and Heather Lam of Vancouver eighth in the 100-m freestyle.
