Cherry/MacLean Among 7 Added

You might not always agree with what they say or how they (Don Cherry) let’s his comments be known, but in reality, they are indeed Canadian Icon’s.

I for one don’t always agree with him (Cherry) as when it comes to understanding the world of officiating, he simply doesn’t understand why they call certain situations.

Why you ask – That’s because he is looking at the game as a retired Coach and in truth, when have you ever heard of a coach saying “good call – I understand” – NEVER!

Regardless of my convictions both Don Cherry and Ron MacLean were among seven (7) new inductees to Canada’s Walk of Fame.

Throughout the 31 years as a “team” they have wrestled with some of the biggest moments in Canada’s sport and quite often draw ire for it only due to Cherry voicing his personal opinion of simple honesty.

What a nice treat to have someone be honest and tell it like it is rather than be someone’s puppet from the “higher-up’s” in today’s ever changing world.

Following six (6) seasons as an NHL Coach and Colorado failed to make the playoffs, he started with CBC as colour commentator in 1980.

Shortly after this and the hype of the segment Coach’s Corner was created and was one of the most successful segment’s ever – despite what you might hear.

ronMacLean was born in Germany as his Father was in the RCAF and eventually moved back to Canada living from Nova Scotia to Whitehorse and eventually Red Deer, where he took up radio at CKRD AM/FM.

He began to anchor broadcasts from western Canada, but was soon moved to Toronto when Dave Hodge was released after protesting a CBC programming decision for a game – thus the infamous pen-flip.

MacLean eventually joined Cherry in the 1986-87 season and the pair have been a house-hold name when it comes to hockey and controversy.

Congrats to the pair on all the success and for making hockey far more interesting for the viewer than it is today.

Once again – it’s not what you do, it’s all about politics in sport and who likes you for doing what you are told to do.

Sort of like a puppet!!

Here’s one for you to enjoy!!
