Playing the best of the best, means bringing your best game to the event and beyond that it’s up to the individual to perform in order to succeed.

All the top players will square off for the double championships at the 2014 Canadian National Racquetball Championships being held in Brossard, Que.

In the men’s semi-finals, 1st seeds Vincent Gagnon of Montreal and Samuel Murray of Baie Comeau, Que. defeated 5th seeds Francis Guillemette of Mercier, Que. and Cory Osborne of Penetanguishene, Ont., 15-8, 15-10, and 2nd seeds Pedro Castro of Brossard, Que. and Tim Landeryou of Saskatoon beat Lee Connell of Saskatoon and Nathaniel Husulak of Saskatoon, 15-10, 15-13.

Of the four men in the final, only Gagnon has won the doubles title before, but that was with François Viens as his partner. Thus, there will be at least one new doubles champion on Tuesday.

In women’s play, top seeds Josée Grand’Maître of Longueuil, Que. and Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg defeated 3rd seeds Vallerie Fallu of Brossard, Que. and  Alexis Iwaasa of Lethbridge, Alta., 15-4, 15-8, and 2nd seeds Brigitte Richard of Saint Basile le Grand, Que. and Christine Richardson of Regina beat 4th seeds Danielle Drury of Saskatoon and Michele Morissette of Baie Comeau, Que., 15-10, 15-12.

Grand’Maître and Saunders will be seeking their 10th doubles title together and fourth consecutive when they play Richard and Richardson Tuesday.

Also on Monday, four time defending champion Mike Green of Burlington, Ont. withdrew from the men’s singles competition, which throws the event wide open. Green’s right arm is injured, and he’s choosing to rest it ahead of the International Racquetbal.

Federation (IRF) World Championships next month, which is happening in his hometown of Burlington beginning June 14.

None of those remaining in the men’s singles draw has won the men’s championship, so a new men’s champion will be crowned at the end of the week. It’s a big opportunity for everyone.

The Canadian Championships doubles competition concludes Tuesday, and the singles competition begins Wednesday. Players are trying to earn points that will get them spots on the Canadian National Team that will compete at the IRF World Championships June 14-21 in Burlington, Ont.

Across all divisions – skill and age – over 135 players are competing this week at the Nautilus Plus Club in Brossard, Québec.
