As much as the sporting world seems to think they have the doping issue under control, it’s time those in charge think again!
Canada is on the leading edge of taking and making huge controls to ensure that any athlete representing our great Nation is clean and free from any drug, should they be tested.
We are still hearing about over the counter drugs that are sold and many athletes simply don’t under what ramifications they can cause to the specific individual.
Recently we heard about this regarding tennis super-star Maris Sharapova’s (28) failed drug test which she tested positive for a banned substance at the 2016 Australian Open.
It was reported that she had been found to have taken Meldonium or Mildronate. The first two, were prohibited effective January 2016.
She claimed she has been on the medication for health reasons for more than 10 years, but regardless the world body suspended her, which was a huge blow to the tennis world.
It’s now reported by Richard McLaren the investigator for the World Anti-Doping Agency that Russia has lost both a speed skating and biathlon events.
Russian biathlon officials voluntarily gave up their rights to host a World Cup round at Tyumen in March and the world junior championships in Ostrov, due to start late February and the Russian Biathlon Union stated “It’s impossible to hold the events in the circumstances.”
Russia is scheduled to host the world championships in 2021, after the IBU awarded hosting rights to Tyumen this past September, just weeks after McLaren’s initial published report into state-backed doping and as expected, the IBU did not address the awarding of the 2021 Worlds.
The International Skating Union mentioned that it was stripping the Russian city of Chelyabinsk of the final round of this season’s World Cup sue to McLaren’s report.
McLaren a Canadian law professor alleged more than 1,000 athletes, which includes Olympic medallists had benefited from a state-backed plan to cover up drug use.
Questions from the general public and “clean Athletes” are asking:
- When will it stop
- How will we stop it
- Are tougher laws needed
And the sports world revolves around winning, but at what cost?
