Loss Of A Legend

If you’re like the many fans that grew up in the 60ties, you became a fan of wrestling, regardless of where you lived in Canada or the US.

Wrestling in the lower mainland was canned All-Star wrestling in 1962 and featured the likes of Gene Kiniski, who became a regular on the roster.

At the time All Star began, the NWA British Empire Heavyweight title was the top singles title in the Vancouver area.

The Pacific Coast Tag Team title initially served as the tag team championship and both titles were carried over from Big Time Wrestling, but after the British Empire title was abandoned after 1963 when Kiniski last won it.

All Star had no singles title of its own until 1970, when the Pacific Coast Heavyweight title (which was first introduced in 1948 in Big Time Wrestling, but became inactive around 1958) was reactivated.

We had wrestlers around like “Bulldog” Bob Brown, Killer Kowalski, Rick Rude and Dutch Savage to name a few.

The sport continues to grow and now it’s more about marketing and TV contracts along with revenue generated for the onslaught of viewers wanting to get a “kick” out of beating someone up.

While there’s a lot of hard work and conditioning involved, it’s all showmanship for the fans who pay the bills, where the rich get richer and the poor man pays.

Calgary had Stampede Wrestling with Owen Hart, Chris Jerico and Chris Benoit, who were in top shape, but while they train, all the money can’t buy anyone’s life.

Such is the case with Owen Hart (34) as he was regarded by a number of fellow wrestlers as one of the WWF’s greatest professional wrestlers of modern era.

Hart died on May 23/99, when there was an equipment malfunction that occurred during his entrance from the rafters of the Kemper Arena in Kansas at the WWF’s Over the Edge pay-per view broadcast.

While the wrestling world morn the loss of Owen Hart, today they also morn the loss of Dusty Rhodes, who passed away in his 69th year.

He was listed a 6’2″ and 275 lbs who took on any and all comers in the ring, not stepping aside for anyone.

He leaves behind two Son’s, Dustin “Golddust” Rhodes and Cody “Stardust” Rhodes who also wrestle for the WWE.

A big man and a bigger loss for the sport. RIP Dusty!!!
