The first official Thanksgiving in Canada was celebrated in the Province of Canada, November 6, 1879.

It was organized at the request of the leaders of the protestant clergy, which was mentioned that the holiday was intended for the public and solemn in recognition of God’s mercies.

This is when the Indigenous people in Canada celebrated the fall harvest that is said to pre-date the first European settlers.

It’s reported that the Smithsonian Institute has notes that indicate some members of the First Nations “sought to insure a good harvest with dances and rituals.”

It’s reported that Martin Frobisher and his crew were credited as the first Europeans to celebrate Thanksgiving in North America in 1578.

The celebration that featured what is known as the traditional North American Turkey, squash and pumpkin was reported to be introduced in Nova Scotia in 1750, eventually becoming quite common across Canada since then.

It wasn’t until 1957 that Thanksgiving was proclaimed an annual event set to occur the second Monday of October.
