Curling

Continental Cup

The first four day Continental Cup is played at the Langley Events Centre in front of a “fair size crowd” on opening day, which saw some impressive curling.

While some might question winning more than once, its interesting to note that no team has won this event twice.

Curling’s inaugural Keg Continental Cup featuring Team North America versus Team World took place at the Agrodome in Regina in 2002.

The event was not played (for whatever reason) in 2005, 2009 or 2010.

The general understanding of the rules of curling for the World Curling Federation applies to all teams competing.

Several key names are playing and those who follow curling, the name many know are Glenn Howard and Amber Holland for the North American team.

The team Captain is Julie Skinner and they are coached by Rick Lang. Howard’s home club is the Coldwater Curling Club and Howard himself has played in 13 Briers for Ontario winning three.

Holland curls at her home club of Kronau, which is located in a rural Saskatchewan.

As for teams and skins competition all teams taking part must be only those which , were originally named to compete at this event.

Any changes must be approved by the Chief Umpire, but these are only due to those with an injury or more specifically extenuating circumstances.

Each side selects six-double team and must consist of two throwers, one man and one woman.

Team World is coached by Peja Lindholm who has skipped Sweden to eight Worlds’, winning three in addition to skipping Sweden in three Winter Olympics’.

Captain of Team World is David Hay, who has put together a team with 2 from Scotland, 2 from Sweden, 1 from China and 1 from Norway.
BC’s Provincial Minister of Community, Sport and cultural Development,

Ida Chong welcomes the world to BC and stated the importance of how this plays a significant role to our young athletes.

It’s important for curlers to pass on any knowledge they have learned to today’s youth so the game can continue to grow and survive, not only in Canada, but the World!

More great curling at the LEC all weekend, so plan on attending!!
