Good news from Taiwan regarding our Canadian athletes competing in various sports and venues letting us know about how the medal count is going, given all the hard work and dedication our athletes have been put through to reach their goal.
We are hearing that Alexia Zevnik (swimmer) is making a splash grabbing a Silver medal in the 200m backstroke at the Taiwan Sport University.
Her time for the swim was recorded at 2:09.92 which is her personal best, beating her previous personal best of 2:11.35 from last years Olympic Trials.
The Gold medalist from Sunday’s 4 x 100m freestyle relay told the media “I’m super shocked at how it went. I knew it was going to be a close race, so I am so happy with the best time I’ve ever swam at this point in my career. I was amazed! I didn’t even see the wall when I touched it.”
Monday saw Katerine Savard nail seventh place in the 50m fly while Delta’s Markus Thornmeyer placed eighth place in the 100m backstroke.
Savard also qualified for finals Tuesday, while Montréal Carabins will compete in the 100m free finals after recording a time of 55.27.
Artistic gymnastics
Canadian Women’s Gymnastics team won Canada’s third medal for the 29th Summer Universiade Monday grabbing a Silver medal in the team event.
The team accumulated 161.100 total points overall and being an earlier team to perform, they were forced to watch and wait to see medal they would take home.
Canada was atop the standings until the final round of teams when Russia, the gold medalists, took to the floor event.
Canadian Gymnast Brittany Rogers mentioned “We’re super excited and coming into the competition we knew we had a strong team, but every year I think Canada gets more in depth and has greater talent coming up, so it’s great to see that we did all that we could today and I think we’re very proud of ourselves.
Ellie Black led the Canadian team with 56.050 total points thereby qualifying for the Vault, Uneven Bars, Beam and Floor individual events August 23.
Women’s basketball
Canada’s Women’s basketball team had an impressive second half coming from behind defeating Portugal 56-45 in the opening game of the Universiade round robin.
Canadian Captain Paige Crozon led with 16 points adding six rebounds plus three blocks in the contest.
Alex Kiss-Rusk also had a strong game grabbing 11 rebounds, which see’s Canada tied on top Pool B standings being 1-0 with Japan.
Canada next opponent will be August 22nd as they take on South Korea, which will be another “nail-biter”.
Men’s basketball
Canada’s Men’s squad had a convincing opening match, but unfortunately Canada was defeated by 79-71 to Finland.
Leading Canada’s squad was Carleton’s Kaza Kajami-Keane for the second consecutive game with 21 points on seven boards.
Canada trailed after three quarters by 30 points, but eventually managed to outscore Finland by a 32-10 margin in the fourth quarter.
Canada’s next opponent will be against Hong Kong, China.
Men’s volleyball
Canada’s Men’s Volleyball team were on the losing end of a five-setter dropping a nail-biter by a 3-2 margin to Switzerland, but were led by UBC’s Irvan Brar with 13 kills, four aces and three blocks.
Pool D see’s Canada sitting in third with three points as they sit behind Iran and Argentina and Tuesday see’s Canada in action against Cyprus, with the first serve scheduled for 8:00 AM EST.
Women’s volleyball
The Canadian women’s volleyball team opened the tournament with a 3-1 (25-22, 15-25, 20-25, 12-25) loss against Switzerland.
Alberta Panda Outside hitter Meg Casault led the Canadian squad with 12 kills in the match and Canada’s next opponent be Ukraine in their second game of pool play.
