Meet singer/songwriter Maya Zita who began her passion for music by studying voice at age seven, and at age 11 she was writing songs.

She was born with music in her veins with her Father and Grandmother both very talented singers which led her to follow her passion for music which ultimately led the release of her very first single called “Ouija Board”.

In a recent Q&A interview with this Canadian rising star, Maya shared her inspiration to write songs, her new single and most important a healthy living including her favorite dish.

Here is our Q&A:

Q: Congrats on your new single Ouija Board and how excited are you to have your debut single?

A: Thank you so much! I am over the moon to have my first single released to the public. I can die happy knowing that I am going to leave this incredible legacy that will last until the end of time.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration to write?

A: I get my inspiration to write from the thoughts I do not speak of and the analogies I think of regarding life, friends, love and so forth.

I would rather talk about situations than feelings in the real world.

Writing about how I truly feel in my world, where I am free to roam without social limitations.

Q: How would you describe your music?

A: I would describe my music as mysterious, hypnotic, sensational, dramatic, groovy, fun, catchy, and unique.

My mind is usually clouded with thoughts but when I listen to the song I am completely distracted; it’s like a brain vacation.

Q: What is the message you want people to take from your song?

A: I want people to understand that doing the right thing is hard because what’s bad for us usually feels good.

We love junk food, social media, and falling for attractive guys who won’t necessarily be good for us long term. At some point though, you need to get back to reality and do what’s right for your future and quality of life.

Q: Tell us about your artwork?

A: The art in the cover photo was my attempt to recreate a Ouija Board in my own unique way. As for the music video, I wanted it to be completely original and so I decided to paint out the letters and numbers in the Ouija Board in a font I created for a high school project.

To make it extra scary, I used blacklight paint so it could glow in the dark. I also created a special mask designed as the board to further emphasize the symbolism of the relationship the song describes.

Q: How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle?

A: I had a lot of trouble taking care of myself last year because I was very depressed.

Recently

I have been trying to focus on what’s in my control and slowly building a better routine. I try

to wake up and meditate to clear my mind, workout before I shower, and make sure I am eating enough everyday.

Most importantly, I try to give myself breaks so I don’t end up crashing at a time I need to be extra attentive to my responsibilities.

I like working out before I shower to get an energy boost and to avoid using coffee as my crutch. I do some basic cardio with 10 pound dumbbells and stretching along with some dancing just for fun.

Q: Do you have a favorite dish?

A: Yes. I love having my family’s traditional Portuguese meals we have at gatherings.

We have charcoal roasted chicken, with Parisienne potatoes, my VoVo’s (grandmother) special tomato rice and grilled red peppers along with other vegetables.

Q: What is next for you and where can people listen to your music?

A: I am planning to release another single every few months. My music is available on almost

every single platform including apple, Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube, etc.

Q: Anything you like to add?

A: I would like to thank you for this interview. For anybody reading this, I hope you pursue what makes you happy and live in the moment.
