Delta Sports Hall of Fame has a history of celebrating the life long accomplishments of local Delta individuals who have all contributed to sport in Delta.
This might have been as a coach, athlete, manager, pioneer or volunteer in the means to develop sport to watch and grow Delta for the future of today’s youth.
When we reflect back to 2005 the Delta Sports Hall of Fame inducted the likes of Stan Stewardson, Joy Fera and Brian Walton to name only three that would become the success it continues to be.
As in past years there will be the 14th Annual induction October 26th at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn where you will again have an impressive group of five (5) Individuals, one Sponsor and one Team award given to an exceptional group.
In addition they will also recognize the Sports Champion winners over the past 12 month and given their success some have made the transition from minor sport to pro sports in a short period of time.
Here is a look at three of this years inductees:
Pioneer Vernon Hartt (Figure Skating)
I personally know Vern as he was my Daughter, Annette’s first skating instructor in Delta and as you can you expect he played an important role in her skating, despite the fact that I am on my skates six days a week, if not seven.
He played a huge role in coaching as well as developing some individuals who went on to skate at a high level, all from the Sungod Skating Club in North Delta.
He had a love for figure skating, no different from other sport individuals and was involved for over 30 years in competitions such as Singles, Dance and Pairs.
He competed in Toronto (1962) in the Canadian Championships where he was the overall champion and came second (2nd) in Mixed Fours and second (2nd) in Mixed Pairs.
Once he moved to North Delta from Penticton where he still resides he was approached by Ron and Carol Fawcett who offered him to Sungod’s club pro in 1972.
Once he accepted the position he quickly organized the club starting with lessons for the young skaters, the youth as well as a learn to skate for the Adults.
His passion and knowledge of other individuals he was soon able to entice other pro’s to become assistants to help grow the Sungod Skating Club.
Builder Brad Trevling (Hockey)
Over the course of time North Delta has seen several great young individuals go from minor hockey to the pro ranks with the help of great volunteers.
Brad grew up in Tsawwassen and was one that excelled in both football and hockey
Using his talent as well as his athletic abilities he made the transition from a playing career to a career in which he would help as the co-founder of the Western Professional Hockey League based in Phoenix.
His old career soon became his new career was just beginning and beyond the WPHL it was in 2003 he (Treliving) was named the Assistant GM of the Phoenix Coyotes as well as the GM of the AHL San Antonio Rampage.
He was hired by the Calgary Flames (2104) as their GM where he has managed to develop quality players that has seen them establish a winning tradition.
Athlete Margo Northey (Gymnastics)
At the young age of 18 she (Northey) began teaching Aerobics classes in a manner to hone her own interest in fitness as well as health and went on to study sciences before becoming an RMT and eventual owner of Tsawwassen Massage Therapy.
She led an exceptional busy lifestyle in both business as well as teaching fitness, which started her on the road to having a successful athletic career, which has been over a 20 year career for Delta’s champion in Aerobic Gymnastics.
In her first effort at Nationals she won the Novice division, going on to captured Gold or Silver in every National Aerobic Gymnastics competition following that.
She soon became a top contender on the World stage that saw her consistently rank in the top ten Women Internationally.
In 2000, she teamed up with Dakota Hart (her old trios partner) as a mixed pair that saw them become the top contender on the International stage, ranking in the top five, which was highlighted by winning Silver Medal at the World Championships.
