2014 Sochi Olympic’s

Published on

With the countdown underway for the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games, it should be remembered that July 4, 2007 saw Sochi beat Pyeong   Chang, South Korea by four (4) votes for the right to host the XXII Olympic Winter Games.

This marks the first time Russia will host after previously hosting the Games of the XXII Olympiad in Moscow in 1980.

Sochi is located (approximately) 1600km south of Moscow and the greater Sochi area has a population of around 400,000.

It lies on the northeast coast of the Black Sea near the border with Georgia.

Sochi is designated as having a humid subtropical climate and therefore has mild winters, with temperatures in February averaging a high of about 10 degrees Celsius and a low of about 3 degrees Celsius at the lower elevations.

Sochi 2014 is being hailed as the most compact Winter Games in the history of the Olympic Movement.

It will be possible to get from one venue to another in just a matter of minutes and all Olympic and Paralympic competition will take place in the same venues.

For this reason (alone) all athletic facilities for the Sochi 2014 Games are being built with the needs of disabled people in mind.

The games are less than 40 day’s away, so it’s important for us as Canadian’s to show our support.
