Wichenheiser Dominates

Hayley Wichenheiser notched the winner at 4:13 of O/T giving the Calgary Dinos a 6-5 win over the UBC T-birds Saturday at the Doug Mitchell Sports Centre in Canada West Women’s hockey action.

Calgary swept the “Birds” in both games with a 5-2 win Friday night taking three of a possible four points on the weekend.

The Dinos are the defending National Women’s CIS Champion’s and are coached by former National team player Danielle Goyette who also won a Gold Medal in Women’s hockey.

Saturday the “Birds” opened the scoring on a goal by Rebecca Unrau giving UBC the lead after 20 minutes of play. Shots through one period were 8-7 in favour of UBC.

The second saw the “Birds” extend the lead by a 2-0 goal by Unrau (second of the night) at 1:43 on the PP. Assists went to Nicole Saxvik and Emily Granger.

The Dinos rebounded and put one on the clock off a S/H marker by Ilya Gavrilova from Zubick.

The goal started an explosion from the Dinos as they scored two more giving them the lead.

Stephanie Zvonkovic tied the game on the PP at 8:18 following a tape to tape pass from Wickenheiser and Kelsie Lang tying the game at two.

Chelsea Petterson put them up 3-2 a short 1:19 later.

The “Birds” tied the game 21 seconds after the Calgary goal which put them ahead as Jenna Carpenter-Boesch scored tying the game at three.

The teams went to the final period all tied and the shots through 2 periods were 16-14 for the Dinos.

The final period saw UBC take a 4-3 lead as Tatiana Rafter wired a shot from the slot past Dinos keeper Jennifer Mallard at 1:34 in the third period.

UBC killed of a two-man advantage keeping the lead but the Dinos struck for the equalizer with a SH goal as Zbrick was off for body checking.

UBC took the lead again on the PP with 3:57 left as Rafter managed to grab her second of the night for the “Birds” giving them a 5-4 lead scoring on the second of a two man advantage.

UBC took a penalty late in the game with 1:42 remaining allowing the Dinos to get the equalizer from Stephanie Ramsay 30 seconds. This evened the game at 5-5, sending it to OT.

The extra session saw Hailey Wickenheiser score at 4:13 giving the Dinos the victory taking three of four points on the weekend trip from Alberta.

T-Birds were outshot 39-21 with Jennifer Mallard finishing the night stopping 17 of 21 UBC shots for the win and at the other end Samatha Langford of the “Birds” finished with 33 saves off the Dinos shooters.

The T-Birds hit the road for the next two weeks with games in Alberta and Saskatchewan before returning home to face Mount Royal at the Doug Mitchel Sports Centre
