White Rock Big Play’s

The final day of Boy’s Basketball in Langley at the LEC saw some exceptional action by teams that were picked to finish higher in the standings by the experts.

As we all know it’s not how you rank throughout the season, but rather at years end.

The day started out on the main court with WJ Mouat losing to Tamanawis by a margin of 64-60, while Oak Bay defeated Point Grey 62-50.

Entering the tourney saw Kelowna ranked at the team to beat, but from the start they failed to gain any ground from game to game and ended up playing Pitt Meadows in a consolation game at 2:30.

Pitt went on to win this contest, sending Kelowna home with a tarnished record. Following this game, the arena was cleared, prepped for the final two games of the week long event.

It is interesting that Vancouver College has been in the top three since 2007 and White Rock has been in the top four since 07.

Vancouver College has three third place finishes and two second finishes, while WR Christian has two in fourth and two second place slots, but failed to finish in 2011.

Each year this event see’s a great finish with the 2011 finish between RC Palmer and Vancouver College being one of the strongest giving Paul Eberhardt his first win.

White Rock was ranked fifth at the start of the season, managed to shoot17 of 30 from behind the three-point arc and got three from seven different players.

The first quarter saw WRC come out flying grabbing a score of 30-19 after one, and after the first half it was 54-38.

White Rock played its fifth game in five nights, managed 32 points and 11 rebounds from senior Jake Newman.

With three point shots working against them, Vancouver College came up shy but putting on a gutsy effort in the last two minutes but missing a third place finish by a 96-95 score.

It’s clear that the talent shown by these players will continue to have the sport grow in all schools, regardless of the area of the Province.

That alone is great to see!! Photo by http://www.dlairdallan.ca/
