Indoor Games Cancelled!!

Achilles International Track and Field Society’s President Marek Jedrzejek mentioned what many thought might happen by stating “Achilles Society and Richmond Kajaks have no choice but to cancel the 2022 Jerome Indoor Games planned for February 4th”.

As one might expect the cancellation was due to the response to the December 17th revision of BC’s public health rules which prohibit Athletic competitions for the upcoming weeks and those living in Delta can contact the Chamber of Commerce for more info or the City of Delta.

At present there appears to be no end in sight for various events that have been put on the “back-burner” for the upcoming days and/or weeks.

Many understand the reason behind the cancellation or as some call it a “postponement” of the event but Co-Directors, Carl Savage and Fred Pawluk of the 2022 Jerome Indoor Meet were “Well advanced in planning for the eleventh version of the only indoor track and field event in Greater Vancouver.”

Given the fact that sports events ranging from Amateur to Pro have been put on the “back-burner” with the exception that pro sport has far more money than any  amateur sporting event.

Training takes time and athletes of all ages begin their training early so as to be “on-top’ of other athletes so as to have a successful career in their chosen sport.

Again we are hearing that all BC’s Track and Field clubs are disappointed again, remembering that last year’s 2021 event was also cancelled due to the pandemic.

The 200m indoor track was completed in 2011 as a major legacy of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games at the Richmond Olympic Oval which attracts almost 1500 people.

The Jerome Indoor Games honoured 1964 Olympic 100m medalist, Harry Jerome whiles providing competition for athletes form youth to seniors for the past decade.

Achilles International Track and Field Society is planning the Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome International Classic set for Tuesday, June 14th at Swangard Stadium.

The non profit volunteer society is hoping that public health rules will allow the event to proceed with safety to all.

Achilles International Track and Field info:

Harry Jerome is a BC athletic hero whose hard work and dedication inspired a nation during the 1960s.

The goal of our program and of our organization is very simple: to leverage Harry’s legacy and inspire BC athletes or potential athletes of all ages through world class international track and field competition.  Right here in our own province.

Imagine entering a stadium full of enthusiastic spectators, waiting for your chance to compete against the best of the best in a facility prepared by a dedicated group of volunteers.

We strive to show that through hard work and commitment this experience is possible for all British Columbians.

We achieve this through our annual meets that help our athletes prepare and possibly compete at the international level:

• Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome International Track Classic

• Harry Jerome Indoor Games

Our society also organizes and funds an indoor competition at one of the Olympic legacy facilities: the Richmond Olympic Oval that is targeted at a junior or grass roots level of sport.

The Vancouver Sun Jerome Indoor Classic provides competition for those 12 years through to 80 years.

Our organization of volunteers, none of which are compensated for their countless hours of dedication, are responsible for delivering the events.

Many of the activities are off the track: hosting, transportation, medical coverage, accommodations, meals and marketing support.
