Hops Shutout Canadians

Published on

A double off the bat of Hillsboro 3B Josh Anderson in the bottom of the 4th inning was followed by an RBI single from RF Luis Veras that ended up being the only scoring of Thursday’s game as the Hops shutout Vancouver 1-0 to send the Canadians to a second straight loss in this five-game series.

Canadians RHP Francisco Rios (2-5) was the hard luck loser going six innings of three hit baseball and didn’t allow a hit until Anderson’s double to left field in the 4th inning.

Rios was countered by Hops RHP Brett Shankin (1-0) who was spectacular over his eight innings as the 25-year old veteran struck out seven.

He limited Vancouver’s offense to only two hits before RHP Cameron Gann came in to retire the side (in order) in the top of the 9th pulling off his second save of the season.

Notes:

1st overall draft pick SS Dansby Swanson is hitless through his first two professional games as he finished 0-for-4 and is now 0-for-6 through two games with a walk and a run scored.

Rios records his first loss since July 10th as the Mexican right-hander was 2-0 in his last five starts with a 1.86 ERA.

With the loss, Vancouver falls to 6-9 (.400) while the Hops improve to 10-5 (.667) heading into Friday’s game set for 7:05pm.
