One has to ask who is headed to the post-season first, the Canucks or the Senators and many are not too convinced that it will be the Canucks.

In doing so the Senators have made a deal with Vancouver and acquired thirty-six year old Alex Burrows in a trade made two days prior to the trade deadline.

The move isn’t a reflection on the play of Burrows, but simply a manner in which the Canucks can move forward for years to come in areas of development and building for the future.

Burrows has played a  total of 822 games amassing 193 goals, 191 assists along with his scrappy 1,066 PIM’s.

He was an un-drafted player who advanced his style of play from the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) to Pro managing to play on the Canucks top line grabbing 19 goals, 15 assists in 70 playoff games.

Burrows had four consecutive seasons with 25 goals taking place between 2008-09 and 2011-12. He mostly played with the Sedins (Henrik and Daniel) and his best year came in 2009-10 when he collected 35 goals and 32 assists.

It’s reported that the Ottawa Senators have signed Burrows to a two-year contract extension worth in the price of $2.5 million per season.

The trade reunites him with Marc Crawford who was his first NHL coach and is now an Assistant Coach with Ottawa.

Canucks GM Jim Benning mentioned in a media press release “We would also like to thank Alex, Nancy, and their three children for their incredible commitment to this team and community for over a decade,”

He continued “Alex is a consummate professional and has been a leader for us throughout his career in Vancouver. We wish him and his family the very best.”

In return the Canucks obtain Jonathan Dahlen, the 42nd overall pick in last year’s NHL Draft.

He registered six (6) points in seven games for Team Sweden when he played at the 2017 world junior championship and managed to lead Team Sweden in scoring with five points in five games at the 2016 Ivan Hlinka under-17 tournament.

While the trade is finalized let’s remember that while the player is often on the move immediately, it’s the Family that is left to finalize things from the previous team.

Not the easiest of moves for any pro player and for someone that was connected to the community, it’ll be even harder.

Sportswave wishes Alex and his Family all the best moving forward to the Nation’s Capital and beside it’s closer to home!!
