Amway Championship

Published on

Some soccer fans are pondering what the Amway Cup Championship is and what is it about, considering the fact they have played seven editions.

The Amway Canadian Championship features (displays) Canada’s five professional clubs taking part in a two-legged home and away three round competition.

The winning club gets to host the Voyageurs Cup and earns the right to represent Canada in the following year’s CONCACAF Champions League.

The Impact Montreal won the first Championship in 2008 and were followed by Toronto FC who won four consecutive seasons ranging from 2009-2012.

Early matches this year saw FC Edmonton defeat Ottawa 3-1 April 22 only to be followed by another 3-1 victory for FC Edmonton over Ottawa April 29th.

The Match that was to be played May 6th was postponed due to snow and unsuitable playing conditions (yes snow) in Edmonton May 6th in Clarke Field.

The final Championship will take place August 12th and 15th at a date to be named later.

Interesting facts dating back to May 1, 2013 saw Whitecaps FC defeat FC Edmonton 2-0 (5-2 on aggregate) at BC Place advancing to the final against Montreal.

This match saw the Whitecaps start slow giving Edmonton the early lead in the 4th minute of play and from there never really regaining quality scoring chances until the second half.
