Gold For Alysson Marshall

Cross country skiier Alysson Marshall (Enderby) won her second Gold medal of the 2011 Canada Winter Games Thursday to go with the Silver medal she won on her first day of competition.

She was joined on the podium for the 10km Classic Mass Start by Andrea Lee (Black Creek) who won the Bronze, her first of the Games.

Team BC currently stands in third place in the medal count at the Canada Games with 75, only one less than the total won at the previous Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, with three days of competition still to go.

Ski Martock continued to be a winning venue for Team BC as all three Para -Nordic athletes finished on the podium. Asquith (Lou) Gibson of Langley won his third Silver medal in as many events, this time in the 5k Sit-Ski Mass Start.

In the 5k Standing Classic Mass Start Para Female race Mary Benson (South Surrey) won Silver and Bronze went to Courtney Knight (Burnaby) with guide Andrea Bundon (Vancouver).

Broderick Thompson (Whistler) clocked the fasted men’s time in slalom and was able to pass the leader of the Super G race and claim the Gold medal. “I was upset with my Super G run. I made a mistake that cost me so I knew I had to go for it in Slalom,” said Thompson. “I’m excited to be a Canada Games champion!”

Team BC’s figure skaters ended the day, and the competition, with three medals. Madeline Edwards (Port Moody) and Zhaokai Pang won Gold in Novice Dance while Noa Bruser (Vancouver) and Timothy Lum (Burnaby) won Bronze. Mitchell Gordon (Vancouver) was the Bronze medalist in Novice Men.

Team BC’s badminton team defeated Newfoundland and Labrador five matches to zero, followed by a victory over New Brunswick five matches to zero.

Team BC has brought a dedicated team of 242 athletes, 74 coaches, three National Artists and 22 mission staff to the Games in Halifax.

Approximately 2,700 athletes, coaches, managers and officials have come to the Games from every province and territory in Canada.

The Canada Games is a national multi-sport Games competition that brings together the best athletes from each Canadian province and territory.

The primary objective of the Games and the Games movement is national and provincial sport development of Canadian youth.
