World Championship of The Quadrennial
Nikola and Luke continue to keep us up to date on the many travels to various parts of the globe and this on is unique.
Enjoy the read!
The Olympic Year is always the hardest World Championship of the quadrennial to race in – everyone has something riding on their results so not only do teams come completely at the top of their game, but the high stakes involved – such as Olympic qualifiers for so many makes the championship incredibly intense and tense.
There are no ‘freebies’ or ‘we’ll let you cross us in a tight spot’ – everyone has their elbows out and most of the time you can hear boats yelling at other boats during situations or making situations out of nothing.
There were many protests each day – the jury had their hands and their whole nights full.
With that being said, we are very happy that we stayed out of the protest room and of course happy with the progress we’ve made in the last couple of months, and even better yet, knowing where we can still improve.
We had moments of brilliance but then we lost a bunch of point’s here and there on preventable things and with that we take home good lessons… better to make those mistakes now than in 6 months.
The Worlds was a testament of strength to everyone who competed. We were faced with some very challenging conditions.
Not only were days cold – some days they were in the single digits Celsius and that hadn’t factored in the wind-chill factor yet… and we had some breeze!
With a few days 20-25 knots, see a video of the conditions here.
Despite being in Florida the water was pretty cold too, only 16 degrees which meant getting and being wet was not that comfortable for the 5-6 hour days on the water!
Now the hard work begins in phase 2: Operation Rio!!!!
