Women’s Action Three-Set Win

The No. 3 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans showed why they are thought to be one of the top teams in the country with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-20) over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

It took just over an hour for the Spartans to improve to 5-0 on the season, while Saskatchewan drops their third straight match against a top three opponent to fall to 2-3 in 2015.Women's Volleyball

Sophie Carpentier (Ottawa) led TWU’s attack with 15 kills on 28 attempts (.536 hitting %) while Elly Wendel (Caronport, Sask.) added 10 kills along with five blocks while PG’s Kristin Anton (middle) had a career-high 10 blocks, while Coquitlam’s Setter Nikki Cornwall had 31 assists.

Emmalyn Copping led the Huskies with six kills while Josie Leduc recorded two of the Huskies five service aces and Jenelle Sokoloski led all Huskies with eight digs.

TWU hit .386 as a team and committed just six attacking errors while also collecting 14 blocks. Saskatchewan hit -.011 and were held without a block.

The Huskies kept the Spartans attack minimal in the opening part of the first set, trailing just 10-9, but from there, the Spartans closed the set on a 15-4 run.

The second set saw TWU jump out to an 8-4 lead before the Huskies pulled within one making it 8-7 and a pair of Carpentier kills sparked a 6-0 Spartan run.

With the third tied 14-14 and the Huskies gaining momentum, a pair of errors followed by back-to-back Devaney kills grew the Spartans lead to four.

The Huskies battled back and stopped any large runs, but could not get the deficit any less than four.

Men’s Action

University of Saskatchewan Huskies swept the No. 5 Trinity Western University Spartans 3-0 by set’s of 25-15, 25-18, 25-18 at the PAC.

The Huskies held the Spartans under 20 points in all three sets improving to 3-2 on the season, while the Spartans drop to 3-2 with the loss.

The win was Saskatchewan’s first victory over TWU since Mar. 6, 2004, when the Huskies beat the Spartans in three sets in the 2004 CIS national championship semi-final.

Prior to Friday, the Spartans had won 27 straight regular season or playoff matches against the Huskies.

Belleville Ontario’s Blake Scheerhoorn led the Spartans with eight kills on 25 attacks while Kelowna’s Leigh Goossen and Surrey’s Aaron Boettcher each notched three service aces in the match.

Spartans logoJordan Nowakowski led the match with 14 kills for the Huskies on 20 attacks. Tyler Epp and Andrew Nelson each had eight kills and three service aces in the match.

Midway through the first set the Huskies broke out on an 11-3 run, sparked by a big Tyler Epp block, to lead 21-11.

The second saw the Huskies jump out to a 3-0 lead before the Spartans responded with a run taking a 7-5 lead.

The Huskie’s called a time-out, and Saskatchewan went on a 3-0 run taking the lead, but TWU kept it close until an 8-3 Huskies run giving Saskatchewan a 22-16 lead and a 25-18 set win.
