North Vancouver’s Jessica Smith will race in the women’s invitational 800-metres at the inaugural AC Indoor Open. Jessica was a semi-finalist in the 800-metres at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
With an outdoor personal best under 2-minutes (1:59.86), Jessica is one the best middle distance athletes in Canada.
She is looking forward to attending her first indoor competition in Canada, which will also be here first visit to Montreal! She states “From what I have been told it will be a fantastic competition with a great atmosphere.”
Last year in Seattle she set an indoor 800-metres personal best time of 2:05.22, and in the off-season she focused on strengthening her weaknesses and concentrated on my running form so that she can be a more efficient runner in the future.
She represented Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games you missed out on the World Championships last year by one spot.
With her missing the World Championships last year, she was definitely disappointed, but she is pleased to have the honour of represent Canada on two other national teams.
She is pleased she can return to international competition with the same strength and confidence that she had in the 2012 season.
She continues to train with the SFU track and field team and alumni under the mentorship of Brit Townsend and she works in the Athletic Department at SFU (part-time) to help financially support myself.
Last spring she completed her undergraduate degree and has no immediate plans to take more classes.
She is looking forward to competing for Canada again this summer at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The 2014 AC Indoor Open will take place in Montreal, Que., March 14 – 16 at the Centre Claude-Robillard.
The event serves as a Canadian Championship for youth and junior athletes and will feature a number of Olympians and World Championship national team members in invitational events.
