Happy 2015 to you and your family.
The T-Birds restarted training on December 26th when we traveled to the Big Island of Hawaii for a week long training camp and a single game against the University of Hawaii-Hilo.
We stayed in the alumni house on the campus of the Hawaii Preparatory Academy and with unlimited access to gym time, the fitness center, the pool and the track, the ‘Birds got busy on getting better and ready for the second half of the season.
The mornings were designated training times which opened the afternoons for exploring the Island. In the evening after enjoying home-made team meals, we spent most nights team-building, goal setting and enjoying each other’s company.
The quality of training and the time together was invaluable and the ‘Birds were sharp, invigorated and determined to have a strong start to 2015.
Last weekend we opened on the road with two games against the University of Lethbridge. The ‘Birds earned two victories but more importantly the team showed tremendous growth since our last games before the Christmas break.
With a deeper overall understanding of our play-book coupled with the commitment to a focused 40 minutes of basketball, the team is taking giant steps forward.
We had strong contributions through our roster with tremendous leadership from our point guards and veteran players.
With the theme of “Stepping Forward to Meet the Challenge” our players are doing just that individually and collectively, with more confidence, bravery and consistency.
This weekend we host the Brandon Bobcats. With three American college transfers the young Bobcats are a more dynamic and athletic team.
We will be working to control the ball defensively to limit dribble penetration, then rebound the ball defensively and set the tone offensively through attacking with speed in offensive transition.
We are well aware that defensive intensity and accountability is a key to a championship season and with our efforts last weekend we experienced first-hand how stingy defense and defensive rebounding can impact the game.
