Tour de Alberta?

Delta plays host to the Tour de Delta each year and it is the kick-off for BC Super Week that brings numerous elite rider from various areas of the globe to compete for the coveted trophy.

I continue to ask “if we have a BC Super Week, why can we not have a Tour de BC, which when you think of it, we could host a would class event to our Province.

tour de alberta 1Now after digging, probing and getting no where from various individuals I find out that there is actually a Tour de Alberta that covers the Province.

The event impacts 3,000 volunteers, 900 Kilometres of Road Closures, runs through 70 Jurisdictions and reaches over 20 communities.

In addition it attracts riders from over 23 countries around the globe, so naturally Alberta is placed on the map and brings a special group to the Province.

So why is it that British Columbia (to date) is unable to figure out how to bring world class rides to ride throughout various communities through the mountain areas and passes?

I have yet to get an answer, but since Guy Gentner was the founding person in Delta that came up with the initial idea, maybe we should reach out to him for answers?

Here’s hoping if we can attract more to the Province, it will help in various areas, such as tourism, being the main one.

The Tour of Alberta is Canada’s largest pro cycling race  and from the start was an overnight success as per the stats for the inaugural race.

“When you look at all the figures from last year, the inaugural Tour was a phenomenal success,” said Duane Vienneau, the Executive Director of the Tour of Alberta. “We want to build on last year’s successes and continue to make this one of the world’s top professional bike races outside of Europe.

Last year proved that Alberta could compete on the world level; the Tour is only going to get bigger and better in the future.”
