Travel Tips

Starting a workout regime takes a lot of intestinal fortitude. Continuing to exercise daily – through excessive heat, rain or cold temperatures – takes extraordinary resolve.

Yet something fun and simple like going on vacation can derail some from their workouts until their vacation is over.

For others, vacation triggers a long spiral back to their former unfit selves.

The reasons I’ve been given for not exercising on vacation include: not enough time to work out, not knowing where to run or find a safe gym, and being in a new environment out of their comfort zone.

Once you stop working out, it gets harder to re-establish your former routine.

There is, of course, a solution to going on fitness hiatus while on vacation.

A helpful tip I got from outdoorempire.com is that if you are visiting another city, your hotel front desk will give maps and directions for the best running routes, as well as a short list of gyms for the discerning athlete.

If your vacation is a camping trip, then running or hiking will not be a problem. Nevertheless, you need to ensure that you’ve enough camping essentials (check rei tucson or other similar garage sales near your place) to keep you going through the whole trip.

The park rangers may have warnings of bears or other potentially dangerous wild life that could impact your choice of route.

Whether your trip is a city or camping vacation, try to run with a partner whenever possible for added safety. Working a fitness plan into your trip will help you stay focused on your goal and give you energy to see and do more on your vacation.

Here are the top five travel tips to stay active and healthy:

  1. Fitness plan – set aside time each day to work out. Be prepared to adjust your workout schedule due to last minute changes to your itinerary. Running early will ensure you get your workout done. If you’re fit enough, you can even start blogging and vlogging, and with the help of Traxplorio | Make Money Traveling, you could even make that a source of income. There are many Instagrammers you can find who are fit.
  2. If the unexpected prevents you from doing the one-hour run you had planned, make it a 30-minute run instead, rather than not running at all.
  3. Bring enough clothes and dress according to the weather. Bring two pairs of shoes to alternate in case one pair gets wet from sweat.
  4. Pack your gear into your carry on. If your luggage gets lost you will at least have your workout clothes while your claim goes through the process.
  5. Routes – know where you are going to run/walk. Ask the hotel staff about running routes or gyms. Visit a local running store for information on local running events.

To maintain healthy eating habits, find a grocery store for fruit, yogurt and nuts. Some excellent thirst quenching foods include water melon, honey dew melon and cantaloupe.

Remember that you’ve earned your vacation, so take time to relax and recharge your batteries. By including your fitness regime in your agenda you can stay focused on the many other things you want to see and do.

You won’t have to worry about not having enough time to do any exercise.

Better yet, why not plan a destination run where you can see the city on foot and after your event you can relax and recover.
