Surrey United Youth teams had an exceptional weekend which managed to combine with the club’s Adult Provincial Championships taking the honours in Men’s A, Women’s A and Women’s Classics Finals.
This alone means that they will have five teams representing BC at the annual Canadian Club Championships in October.
The finals – which took place Minoru Park, Richmond, hosted by Fusion FC and BC Soccer – attracted excellent crowds despite mixed weather.
Teams from the EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League (BCSPL) were the designated participants with finalists determined by league standings in mid-June followed by play-off games and semi-final matches.
Whitecaps FC legend and club ambassador Carl Valentine was also on hand to make a number of trophy and medal presentations .
The quality of play and competition was demonstrated Saturday in the four boy’s finals where each ended in 1-0 wins for the Surrey United SC.
The weekend began with the U13 final where a late second half goal from Kevin Ramirez saw them overcome the stubborn resistance of Thompson Okanagan FC. Midfielder Nick Fussell was rightly awarded as the game’s MVP.
In the U14 final Surrey United overcame rivals Coquitlam Metro-Ford, with MVP Noah Owen grabbing the only goal of the game and earning the team the right to represent BC in the 2012 U14 Canadian National Championships taking place in Vaughan, ON.
Host club Fusion FC faced Surrey United SC in the U15 final in what proved to be another closely contested game.
Surrey United defender Cole Basarich proved to be the difference between the teams as his MVP performance was capped off with a first half goal that proved to be the game winner.
The day’s action concluded with the U16 final which proved to be the closest game of the day, with Surrey United SC beating Mountain United FC 1-0 with a goal in overtime from Kyle Sohi and Vagelli Boucas the worthy recipient of the MVP award.
The win earned the Surrey boys a place at the U16 National Championships which take place this year in Charlottetown, PEI.
Sunday morning kicked off with the boy’s U18 final, delayed by a day due to the two semi-finals being played last Friday night and featured an all Coquitlam Metro- Ford affair between their U17 and U18 teams.
Not surprisingly, this hotly contested inter-club final proved to be a close one, with the U18 team winning 1-0 thanks to a goal by Adam Jones with Lucas Reis being named MVP.
A trip to Sydney, NS is the prize for the Coquitlam Metro- Ford boys.
The five girl’s finals on Sunday were again extremely close games with host club Fusion FC beating South Fraser FC on penalty kicks, 3-2, after the teams failed to be separated in regulation and overtime.
Fusion FC coached by former Canadian National team and Whitecaps player Randee Hermus, also had Kristen Anderson named as the game’s MVP.
South Fraser FC U14 girl’s earned their right to represent BC at the U14 Canadian National Championships in Vaughan, ON with a 2-1 wins over Mountain United FC.
Isabella Boccia was named MVP after scoring one of the two South Fraser goals, the other coming from Ashley Burgess. Emma Cunningham got the goal for Mountain.
The U16 girls final saw Mountain United FC take the honours, with a 2-0 win over Coquitlam Metro- Ford securing their place as BC representatives in Charlottetown, PEI for the U16 National Club Championships.
MVP Seina Kashima and Margaret Hadley grabbed the goals for the Mountain girls.
The finals concluded as they had begun with Surrey United SC girls winning both the U15 and U18 finals.
In the U15 final, despite going down to 10 players in the second half, the Surrey girls overcame Coquitlam Metro- Ford 2-0, with goals from Jenna Baxter and Gurneet Dhaliwal proving to be the difference .
Baxter also took the game’s MVP honors.
The U18 final surprisingly proved to be the most one-sided of all the weekends finals where an outstanding performance from the Surrey United SC girls saw them beat host club Fusion FC 5-0.
Two goals from Danica Kump plus solo efforts from Chelsea Harkins, Sunayna Samra and Carina Lauzon completed the scoring who also missed a second half penalty.
Carina Lauzon was named as the game’s MVP as the team celebrated the chance to gain a national club championship in Sydney, NS in October.
