Surrey Adding New Rinks
It’s sort of out with the old and in with the new or so it seems for the City of Surrey as they are in the stages of building new Arenas in the area.
Let’s not forget that Surrey’s Recreation mission is to build healthy communities where everyone can be active and totally engaged in the area in which they live.
One with two sheets of ice or floors will to be built in Cloverdale and will be on the recently cleared land at the Fairgrounds on 64th Ave on the south side of the road.
We are hearing that the other facility will be a “showcase” arena that will feature three sheets of ice or dry floor at various stages of the year and will be located at 12780 110th Ave just south of the Skytrain and the Home Depot store.
Cloverdale’s complex is tagged to cost $35-million and is scheduled to be open in the spring of 2019, while the North Surrey Arena is scheduled to possibly be built by the summer of 2019.
The new Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex is designed in a partnership with Taylor Kurtz Architecture & Design Inc as well as Rounhthwaite Dick and Hadley Architects Inc and will take in the following aspects:
- Create welcoming arenas with gathering spaces
- Respond to emerging trends in arenas
- Create venue opportunities located on site to support major events
- Increase recreation opportunities for ice and dry floor seasons of play
- Benefit minor sport hockey groups
- Solve any problems for waitlists for Learn to Skate programs
The North Surrey Complex will be more of a show palace rink and let’s not forget that there are still rumors around that the Vancouver Giants might relocate from the LEC, but at this point it’s pure speculation!
Located near the Skytrain it’s prime to attract fans who can now attend without driving as well as having no parking issues so clearly a win – win for everyone.
Both Arena’s are long overdue and given the recent growth of the City of Surrey this will be of huge benefit to everyone and different to adjacent Cities in the area such as Delta; Surrey has Hotels where those attending won’t have to travel through a tunnel to get to any game.
Food for thought?
- Will the Vancouver Giants move to the new location?
- Will the City of Surrey bid to host major international events such as International Tennis?
- Will the City of Surrey now play to host the BC Summer/Winter Games?
