SPORTS IMPACT INDICATOR
The Impact Indicator is designed to measure the G-force and duration of hits (impact) sustained by an athlete’s head during play or activity in sports.
It uses highly sophisticated technology and proprietary software, embedded in a helmet chinstrap, to signal the possibility of a head injury.
This revolutionary new product will alert referees, players and coaches to get a player off the ice or field for a medical assessment – maximizing treatment, recovery and possibly preventing subsequent brain injury.
The Impact Indicator is being introduced in 2011 for use in the sports of hockey and football, where the majority of impact related head injuries occur resulting in concussions and other serious complications.
The Impact Indicator is also being developed for all other sports where there is already a safety helmet use and may be a high risk of injury to the head as a result of severe impact, including skiing, snowboarding, cycling, lacrosse etc..
Head injuries caused by severe impact to the head have been increasingly associated with a major deterioration in a multitude of health issues including concussion and related symptoms.
The Impact Indicator technology has been developed over several years of scientific research and testing conducted at Wayne State University, the leading concussion research university in North America and together with athletes and sports organizations dedicated to prevention of head injuries and concussions in sport.
In 2011, there will be limited availability of the Impact Indicator at only select leading sporting goods retailers across Canada.
