Whitecaps Playing Solid

The Vancouver Whitecaps fought to a scoreless draw against DC United in MLS action in front of 19,394 faithful fans at BC Place Stadium.

This improves their season record to 2 wins and 1 draw collecting 7 points out of a possible 9 in the first three games of the new season.

This all under the new Head Coach Martin Rennie as the squad has yet to allow a goal against to remain near the top of the standings in the Western Conference.

The Whitecaps improve to 2-0-1 with 3 goals scored in 270 minutes of play this season allowing them to move to first place in the Western Conference standings.

The first half featured solid play from both sides as they tried to break the back line of each other which resulted in very few scoring chances.

Eric Hassli had the best chance in the opening minutes sending s free kick just over the crossbar from 28 yards out with DC goalkeeper Joe Willis watching it sail wide.

Hassli again in the 29th minute saw his header off a Le Toux cross end up wide of the near post. DC United got their first scoring opportunity in the 33rd minute as Maicon Santos shot was directly at the Caps “keeper” Joe Cannon who easily smothered the shot.

The Caps had a chance seven minutes from halftime as Sebastian Le Toux’s free kick just outside the DC United penalty area was deflected wide off a defender to keep the game scoreless.

Alain Rochat suffered a lower leg injury in the 57th minute and saw him replaced by Jordan Harvey.

Just after the substitution Camilo made a run in the penalty area and was going for the low corner only to have “keeper” Joe Willis come up huge to keep it a scoreless draw.

Dwayne De Rosario began to make a impact in the game for DC United in the second half making some brilliant runs which included a chance to open the scoring only to be foiled by Cap’s “keeper” Joe Cannon in the 65th minute.

Eric Hassli almost ended the game in the 80th minute for the Caps sending a shot wide of the mark, as De Rosario of United had his shot stopped by Cap’s “keeper” Joe Cannon with only 5 minutes left.

The game ended in a very entertaining draw a deserving result for both sides.

The Caps remain in top spot in the Western Conference with a 2 wins and 1 draw for a total of 7 points.

This is good enough for top spot while DC United remain winless in three starts, with 2 losses and 1 draw.

The caps hit the road for two games on the road, with one in Philadelphia (March 31st) and one in San Jose (April 7th) prior to returning to home turf April 18th against Sporting KC.
