Silver For Virtue & Moir

Competing at the highest level takes practice, commitment and dedication that only a few athlete’s have, but to do it in the sport of Figure Skating is special.

Once you make it, your future is in the hands of judges, honest, dedicated, controversial, while others simply cheat.

Right or wrong it happens and while I am not an expert in this sport when it comes to judging, quite simply put, I despise those in the sport that are in it due to politics.

Such is the case with some, but not all judges and over the years I have got to know some exceptional individuals who truly love the sport and are passionate about teaching today’s youth for a better tomorrow.

For Judges to have an attitude like this is something they alone should get a Gold Medal for, but again – it’s called POLITICS.

It happens in all sports and we as a society lose some great individuals who could compete and advance, but they quit due to a small handful of what I call “WRONG-DOOERS”.

Try as they might our Canadian Ice Dancer team and defending champions of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir have captured our hearts, but have to settle for a Silver Medal at the Sochi Olympics this time round.

They skated a flawless free dance but were narrowly edged by out the American rivals of Charlie White and Meryl Davis.

Tessa and Scott finished with 190.99 points after collecting 114.66 in Monday’s free dance session while White and Davis finished first with 195.52 points, which included 116.63 in the free dance, making them the first ever American Champions in the event.

Tessa Virtue is from London, Ontario and Scott Moir comes from Ilderton a short distance from London who trailed the Americans by 2.56 points after Sunday’s short dance.

The Russian pair of Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov took Bronze with a score of 183.48.

Canada’s other pair’s of Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje of Waterloo finished seventh with 169.11 while Alexandra Paul of Midhurst and Mitchell Islam of Barrie were 18th with 138.70.

Virtue and Moir are the two-time World Champions and train with Davis and White in Canton, Michigan, plus they share a coach in Russian Marina Zoueva.

The two teams from North American have won every international ice dance title since Virtue and Moir won Olympic gold in 2010 in Vancouver.

Davis and White won the 2013 world title and the Grand Prix Final in December, so the tables are turning, judging or otherwise and we’ll never know!!
