The Men’s hockey team recorded their 15th victory of the season with 5-1 win over Eastern Washington Saturday at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre.
They trail Selkirk College by three points in top spot in the league. They jumped off to a 3-0 lead by the 2:32 of the second and never looked back playing a solid defence.
They ran away with a 5-1 victory where Millner (a pair) and Pillar (single) as they took the three goal lead into the final period. Shots through two were 24-19 for the visitors as Gordon preserved the shutout.
In the final saw Graf and Mah extend the lead to 5-0 by the midway mark of the third before Washington’s Maxwell managed to beat SFU’S Gordon with just under four minutes left in regulation time. Final score was 5-1 and shots were 29-27 for SFU, seeing Gordon stop 26 of 27, preserving the win.
They have four games left in the regular season and one home game remaining February 15th against TWU. This is also fan appreciation night for the club come.
The final three games are all on the road as they travel to TWU for a rematch of the Friday game at the LEC on Saturday at 7:00pm to be followed by a trip to Kamloops to play Selkirk College on the 23rd. Then it’s on the post season for the club.
UBC Women’s Hockey
The Women’s Hockey team managed to pick up a season ending 3-2 O/T win over the Alberta Golden Bears in addition to doing it two consecutive nights allowing them to finish third in the CIS West sporting a 17-7-4 for a record breaking season. This allows the team qualifying for the post season play.
Scoring the winner for the “Birds” was Capozzi which saw others come off the sticks of Brown-John and Shaupmeyer.
Alberta got markers from Mousek and Campbell who beat T-Birds “keeper” and saw Langford stop 18 of 20 shots on the night.
Men’s hockey
The Alberta Golden Bears once again proved why they are #1 in the country, pulling off a 5-2 win over the “Birds”.
The “Bears” opened up a 3-0 lead on UBC in the second on goals by Lazo, Lindemudler, and Joe. by the 5:17 mark of the period. UBC got back to back goals as Wilson beat Bears “keeper” Cyr taking a 3-2 into the third. Schmidt got the “Birds” to within one at 7:12 on a PP making it 3-2 for the Bears.
The Bears closed out the game in the final minute with an empty netter by Toomey, and a PP goal by Hickmott making it a 5-2 final.
The Bears finished with a record of 23-5-0 putting them in first place, while the “Birds” finished with a record of 14-11-3 – good for fifth. They will play Calgary in the post season which starts February 16-17.
Volleyball
The top ranked lady “birds” won their 20 straight win in four sets over Mount Royal Cougars only losing the first game 30-28. They took the next three games by scores of 25-12, 25-21, and 25-17 to close out the regular season for an overall record of 21-1.
The Men also completed a sweep of Mount Douglas with scores of 25-11, 25-18, and 25-19 to finish the year 15-7 finishing fourth in the CIS West .
Basketball
UBC teams swept the University of Northern BC in Women’s play as they defeated UNBC 70-48 to finish tied with the University of Fraser Valley.
Both have records of 16-4. The Men were 93-61 winners and finished off the season 18-2 which has them in top position in the Pacific Conference; also qualifying for the post season.
