The Simon Fraser University women’s wrestling team competed at the Missouri Valley College Open on Saturday with Justina DiStasio (Coquitlam) and Jenna McLatchey (Chilliwack) winning their weight classes.
DiStasio went undefeated through four matches to win in the 170 bracket.
She started off with a victory against Brenda Mendoza of Wayland Baptist University and then defeating Menlo College’s Solove Naufau by technical fall.
In her final two matches DiStasio continued to dominate, winning against Brittany Jones of Missouri Valley College and defeating Lindenwood’s Ruth Leger to take the title.
At 191, McLatchey also went undefeated through four matches to claim victory.
She started on her road to victory with a win over Alana Jimenez of the Bearcat Wrestling Club and then won by decision against Justina Luafaleman of Northwest Tech.
McLatchey took her final two matches by decision as well defeating Angela Vyborny of Wayland Baptist University and Malexsis McAdoo of KingUniversity to claim victory.
Two members of the Clan also came second in their brackets as Nikki Brar (Abbotsford) was the runner-up at 116 and Darby Huckle (Sarnia) at 101.
Brar won her first four matches, besting Emily Ducote of Oklahoma City University, Tricia Martin of Jamestown Colle, Michelle Lomas of Campbellsville and Bree Rapoza of Missouri Baptist.
She ran into Jessica Fresh from Waldorf College in the final who took the match by decision.
Meanwhile Huckle won two matches to reach the championship match taking down Tamika Jones of Wayland Baptist and Brianna Rahall of Oklahoma City University to earn a spot in the championship match.
Huckle could not get by Oklahoma City University’s Emily Website in the final though and settled for second.
Also competing for the Clan were Laura Anderson (La Quinta, CA) who finished seventh at 123, Gina Carpenter (Surrey) who finished fourth at 130, Mallory Velte (Sacramento) who finished fourth at 136, Jilliane Vina (Vancouver) and Monika Podgorski (New Westminster).
The Clan women will be back in action on December 16 at the South Western Oregon Duals. Basso scores golden goal to send the Clan to round three.
