Sarah Hunter Wins Sardinia Open

BC’s Sarah Hunter won Saturday’s quad singles finals at the 13th Sardinia Open, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, as the last ITF 1 Series tournament of 2012 came to an end at the Alghero Tennis Centre.

Hunter arrived in Sardinia unseeded for the quad singles, having claimed her last NEC Tour title before the season in 2010. But the former world No. 2 won her second title of the year after ending Italy’s hopes of a home winner in Sardinia when she beat top seed Antonio Raffaele 6-3 6-1.

“I had a few jitters,” Hunter said. “My serve has been very good all week although I was a little hesitant on my forehand ground strokes. It’s is a good start to my return on the tournament circuit.”

Hunter moves on to play next week’s US Open in Saint Louis, Missouri, an ITF Super Series event, where she will face strong opposition from the world’s top quad players from GB, Israel and the US.
