Ready – Set – Go

Nothing is certain, so that is what everyone continues to say that practice makes perfect and the older you get the more you understand the meaning of this.

This World Championships is also the first Olympic Qualifier for all sailing classes. All 10 Olympic Sailing Classes are racing here for the chance to qualify their nation a spot at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Each class has a different number of spots allocated to them – 50% of which will be spoken for here in Santander.

Because there are 80 boats in our fleet, there need to be two separate fleets of 40.

The first 2 days of racing are Qualifying races, which means we are seeded into groups (Yellow and Blue, 40 boats each) and after 5 races, the groups will then be divided into GOLD (top 50%) and SILVER (bottom 50%).
Thus, the first hurdle is always to start off strong and qualify for GOLD.

The Nacra 17 class has 20 Olympic nation spots available total. Over the next 3 Qualifying events, these will be allocated. Here, at the Santander Worlds, 10 of those spots will be allocated to the top 10 ranked countries.

With 30 countries competing in an 80 boat fleet, it’s going to be fierce competition to get those spots.
