Questions Concerning Judging – Still?

Given all the concern and questions that arose during the judging of the Women’s Figure Skating in Sochi, it’s not too surprising that one of the countries involved would file a protest.

Right or wrong, someone had to step up and show the IOC that this is more than questions on the skaters or how the judges do the job they are to do.

In Canada we were concerned about the judging with Tessa and Scott, but we just put things aside and let it go, but apparently not in South Korea, where they take things a little more serious.

The South Korean Olympic Committee has officially filed a protest over the results of the Women’s Figure Skating Competition, although the sport’s international governing body has not yet received the letter.

It should be noted that in the International Skating Union rules and regulations, such protests must be filed immediately after the event is completed.

The Koreans believe the judging was extremely biased and cost Yuna Kim a second Gold Medal, whereas the 2010 champion finished with Silver, slightly behind the 15 year old Russian teenager Adelina Sotnikova.

IOC spokesman Mark Adams says any figure skating protest is a matter for the ISU to handle.

Much of the uproar concerns the women’s free skate centres on what many perceived was a lack of artistry in Sotnikova’s program, but the marks explained why Kim fell six points short of her unanticipated rival.

The reigning title-holder managed six triple jumps but only her opening pair in combination and Sotnikova did seven, five in combination.

Kim had no triple loop, has never done it, therefore was marked down to Level 3 (out of 4) on a layback spin, plus her back is stiffer than Sotnikova’s; also on a footwork sequence and spiral.

That meant extra points on the Grade of Execution were given, while Kim received better component marks — 74.50 to 74.41 for Sotnikova.i

This was nowhere close enough to compensate for lesser technical scores of 69.69 to 75.54.

The free skate was 149.95 for the Russian, 144.19 for the Korean and overall scores: 224.59 versus 219.11.

Kim apparently relied on her presentation alone, while Sotnikova did what she came to do and basically sold it.
