PJHL Delta Ice Hawks – Exclusive TV Coverage.
Locally the only team in the PJHL that is covered by a Major Market TV Station is the Delta Ice Hawks who broadcast Tuesday games exclusively on Eastlink Community TV channel 610.
The games are on-air at 7:30 which are live with the repeat Friday night with Steve Erickson supplying the Play by Play which he has been working with the station dating back to 1988.
In addition to the hockey broadcasts he also covers a variety of other events that are required as planned by Kevin Adlem who is the station Director, Producer, Camera Op & Editor to name a few.
In a league where streaming services dominate, the Delta Ice Hawks have stood out since the beginning, partnering with Eastlink Community TV, which is the local station covering Delta as well as the Sunshine Coast bringing their games to the community since 1998,
The Ice Hawks have played in the PJHL’s Tom Shaw Conference, winning five championships, including a recent triumph last year.
The collaboration with Eastlink Community TV sets the Ice Hawks apart, as they are the only team in the PJHL to have their games televised. Every Tuesday at 7:30 PM, fans can catch the action live, with play by play from Steve Erickson and colour commentary by Ian Wilson..
Despite not having a large broadcast setup, Eastlink Community TV has streamlined their approach, using a compact “Fly-Pack” that sets up on a single table.
I enquired to Kevin Adlem, the station’s producer and he mentioned the logistics of the set-up mentioning “In the past we had a mobile truck that we were able to drive around… but now we just have a fly pack that sits on one table which can all run with one or two people.”
Eduard Epstein, Owner of the Delta Ice Hawks acknowledged the positive impact of the broadcast quality for the players, the team and the league as well as the overall atmosphere for league exposure.
He mentioned “The quality of the broadcast that Eastlink Community TV offers just creates a great atmosphere for the players where they try their hardest and work their best. I think it creates a great atmosphere in the rink and on the ice.”
This partnership has not only elevated the game-day experience for those watching “live” at home but has also resonated with the community which is now expected Tuesday nights.
Kevin Adlem talked about community feedback saying “I think the community has learned to enjoy and expect our coverage. We’ve done some surveys with our subscribers, and of the top three programs that come back, Delta Council, Delta Ice Hawks, and one of our cooking shows. So, Delta Ice Hawks make the top three every time.”
Eastlink Community TV looks to continue the overall promotion of Amateur sports within the City of Delta for the foreseeable future with Kevin Adlem mentioning “Whether it be the Delta Ice Hawks, or other sports allowing Delta’s Athletes a chance to shine remains as a top priority for the station.”
Tune in each Tuesday during the season and catch exciting PJHL game action with the Ice Hawks continue to make their mark in Delta with local players in the roster.
