Canada Defeats Finland O/T

While many are not understanding of what Ringette is about or why they play with hockey sticks with no blade, if you watch a game you will see a tremendous amount of talent from everyone.

Canada excels on the world stage and when they attend any event they do Canada proud by displaying a tremendous amount of talent, in addition to conducting themselves in a truly respectable manner.

Canada’s junior team recently attended the annual tournament in Helsinki Finland over the holidays while at the same time defeating the Finns 10-9 (OT) claiming the Gold medal at the World Ringette Championships.

The Canadian squad were undefeated in round robin play and beat the Finns in two games of a best of three series.

Entering the game Canada was positive and in a feel-good mood knowing what was in store for them also knowing discipline played a key role in the game.

“Ottawa’s Sarah-Lynne Begin scored the O/T game winner and told the media “It feels good pulling off the win.”

She continued to tell the media “I was a bit nervous going into the second game, but looking around at the girls in the dressing room, I knew we were ready and I knew we could do it and in addition to picking up the game winner, Begin picked up a second goal and three assists in the game.

She was also named as the player of the game for Canada and also managed to picked up top center and MVP for Canada for her performance in the event.

Guelph’s Abby Richardson and Moncton’s Jenny Snowdon both got hat tricks in the game and Moncton’s Britney Snowdon managed to add a single.

Ringette logoAdditional awards for Team Canada include Boucherville’s Laurie St-Pierre pulling down the top goalie and the Snowdon sisters were named as the top forwards.

The Canadian senior squad could not push the Sam Jacks series to three games, losing 13-0 to Finland to go home with silver.

Susanna Tapani led the scoring for Finland with four goals and three assists, while Maria Perkkola recorded the shut out in nets and picked up the player of the game award.

Dailyn Bell of Lacombe’s was named as the player of the game and immediately following the game, awards for the Sam Jacks series were awarded with the top defenseman award going to Calgary’s Christianne Varty.
