New Head Coach

The Canadian Soccer Association is pleased to announce the hiring of Robert Gale as the new Men’s U-20 National Team Head Coach, effective April 1st.

“Rob brings a wealth of coaching experience, having worked both in Canada and overseas in player development,” said Tony Fonseca, Technical Director of Canada Soccer. “These past endeavours along with his commitment, enthusiasm and passion for the game make him ideal for this position. His coaching credentials are of the highest order and his ability can been seen in the players as well as the coaches he has mentored.”

Formerly Technical Director of Manitoba Soccer, Gale has experience working with players across all levels.

“It’s an honour to lead the Men’s U-20 National Team,” said Gale. “I look forward to working with the players and developing the necessary plans to move forward. I am both humbled and proud to have this opportunity.”

Born in Zambia to British parents, Gale joined Fulham FC as a teenager, before turning professional with Wycombe Wanderers FC. While playing he completed a degree in Media Production at the University of Luton.

Upon completing his studies, in 1998, Gale decided to stop playing professionally and focus on coaching.

He proved a quick study, obtaining his licenses while rising in various developmental roles in the UK, USA and Canada before becoming Technical Director of Manitoba Soccer in 2006.

As a coach, Gale has led Canada’s Men’s U-18 and U-16 Teams, achieving positive results, while successfully transitioning players to the National Team.

It is expected that he can turn the team around not only to play better on the pitch, but also get a respectable raking in the world of International Soccer.

SOCCER CANADAGale has also served as Assistant Coach to Canada’s National U-17 Men’s Team, helping them qualify for two successive FIFA U-17 World Cups—where the team went undefeated in four consecutive matches.

As Head Coach of the Men’s U-20 National Team Gale’s first order of business will be to prepare the squad for its first training camp in May. The team will then travel to Ireland in July to participate in the Dale Farm Milk Cup.

With the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship less than a year away, the goal, says Gale, is “to build on what has already been accomplished, by creating a new vibrant chemistry – a chemistry that we must not be afraid to express on the world stage.
