Lions News

The BC Lions Football Club announced this morning that quarterback Buck Pierce has informed the team of his intention to retire.

Pierce originally signed with the Lions in 2005 and was a key member of the club as both a back-up and starter through five seasons (’05-’09) before playing three and-a-half seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The former California resident who now makes his offseason home in Winnipeg returned to the Lions last year in a trade with the ‘Bombers and dressed for the final eight regular season games and the Western Semi-Final. “Buck was a fearless competitor who never hesitated to put his body on the line for our organization,” said VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono.

“He was loved by both fans and teammates alike and on behalf of the Lions, we wish him the very best in the future.”

Pierce appeared in 94 games over his two stints with the club including a start in the final regular season game for the Leos in 2013.

The nine-year, 130-game veteran out of New MexicoState recorded 15,289 career passing yards (8,964 with BC) on 1,200 completions (713 with BC) with 76 touchdowns (51 with BC).

He won a Grey Cup championship with the Lions in 2006 and also guided the ‘Bombers to an appearance in the Grey Cup in 2011. “I am very grateful for the support of teammates, fans and management in both BC and Winnipeg during my career,” said Pierce.

“Having an opportunity to retire as a Lion where I won a championship is a tremendous honour. It’s been a great ride and I’m ready to move into the next phase of my football career.”

Season ticket holders save up to 27% on the cost of single game tickets and receive first option on their seats for playoffs and the 102nd Grey Cup.
