Changes continue in the off-season with various teams that are looking to have a more productive 2024-25 season and as we all know the season never ends.
Despite the fact that coaches are permitted to change from what Hockey Canada are calling an “outlaw league” they are still holding the officials hostage by not permitting them to officiate in league with retired NHL officials who we are managing to send some to the NHL Combine.
In a recent conversation with some in the last while they are telling us that the system is broken and the only ones getting hurt are the players.
Given the changes we received a note letting us know that the Kelowna Chiefs have hired Nick Deschenes as their Head Coach and GM.
Deschenes joins the Chiefs after previous KIJHL stops with the Grand Forks Border Bruins, Summerland Steam and Sicamous Eagles, as well as the BCHL’s Trail Smoke Eaters. Last season he led the Eagles to a 31-12-1-0 record, good for fifth in the overall regular season standings.
Chiefs owner Darren Tymchyshyn mentioned in the press release “The Chiefs are excited to have Nick join the organization as our new Head Coach and General Manager,”
He continues “Nick’s proven success developing players and preparing them for a higher level was a major factor in my decision. Importantly, Nick’s ties to the local minor hockey community will expedite my goal of recruiting more players to stay close to home and play for the Chiefs.”
Deschenes takes over a Chiefs squad coming off a 16-24-3-1 record that saw them finish fourth in the Bill Ohlhausen division standings.
Nick Deschenes mentioned “I’m honoured to be selected to help guide the Kelowna Chiefs under the leadership of new owner Darren Tymchyshyn,”
He continued to mention “I look forward to building a successful program that leverages the talented hockey players here in Kelowna while continuing to grow alongside the KIJHL as the league moves towards Junior A, Tier 1 status. I’m looking forward to the challenge and happy to be coaching where I call home.”
The Chiefs will make further announcements regarding preparations for the upcoming season, including main camp dates and registration info, in the coming weeks.
Congratulations on the hire and we wish them all the best moving forward in the KIJHL!!
