The Sport Matters Group applauds the efforts of MP John Weston and fellow members of the Parliamentary Fitness Initiative to launch National Health & Fitness day on June 2nd, 2012.
This day will serve to encourage all Canadians to pursue healthier lifestyles by increasing their participation in physical activity, recreation and sport.
Mr.. Weston has worked with local government and other partners to create a day dedicated to celebrating health and fitness and encouraging Canadians to be physically active.
Mr.. Weston will be engaged in a number of activities in his riding that day. A Private Member’s Bill will also be introduced in the House of Commons afterward.
“SMG strongly supports federally-led initiatives such as the annual National Health & Fitness Day”, said Chris Jones, Senior Leader of the Sport Matters Group.
“I want to commend the tireless work that John has done with his colleagues, Peter Stoffer, M.P., Kirsty Duncan, M.P. and Pascal-Pierre Paille, M.P. to promote the benefits of physical activity with Members of Parliament from all sides of the House.
These events reflect our Parliamentarians’ understanding of the benefits of sport and physical activity for Canada. We are currently facing an inactivity crisis.
Canadians are increasingly sedentary and face growing levels of obesity and related chronic illness.
Participation in sport and physical activity can help Canadians get physically fit, thereby increasing their overall health and ultimately reducing skyrocketing health care costs.
We would encourage all Canadians to get active on June 2nd, in recognition of National Health & Fitness Day.”
