ISU World Figure Skating Championships

Every so often you happen to hear about a sport that seldom gets coverage from major markets, that is unless it about a National Championship or on the Olympic stage but seldom at the local level.

Social media does wonders and not only does it connect sporting events it connects you with individuals whom you have crossed paths with and just haven’t talked with in a while

Flipping through various social media outlets I was impressed to see information about figure skating and reflecting back I recall the days when my Daughter Annette started figure skating at a young age which honestly speaking helped her when she began playing hockey.

I remember the days of her Mom Doreen sewing various costumes for the local skating club carnivals the club would hold each year which was always impressive to watch the progression of all the young skaters.

A few years back I was fortunate to not just meet but have an interview with Denise Watkins who is currently a Board Member at 3 Valleys Community Foundation in California and resides in Pleasanton California.

At one point she was the owner of the Vancouver Stealth for 11 seasons that made the move to Langley in 2014 and despite enjoying retirement but keeping busy and is currently in Boston enjoying the ISU World Figure Skating Championships.

Having been friends on Facebook I noticed that she posted some interesting photos and in reaching out I asked her if she would mind sending me some photos which she graciously offered to do, which are appreciated.

The first event was the Ladies short program noting that as Alyssa Liu and Isabeau Devito skated beautifully mentioning that Amber came up short with a couple of mistakes.

The pairs short program saw Danny O’Shea and Ellie Cam have a good skate having some throw jumps and impressive lifts.

Canada’s skaters Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps won the 2024 World Championships in Montreal and are eager to defend their title following Stellato-Dudek’s Oath of Citizenship

From Skate Canada:

The pair of Deanna Stellato-Dudek (Chicago, USA) and Maxime Deschamps (Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec) are defending their pairs title with a seventh place finish in the short program and earned a score of 67.32 for their short program.

After they completed the short program they mentioned “We felt good, but we made a few mistakes and we had some good moments and some more difficult ones, as if something was off. Still, it’s an experience from which we must learn.”

Two other Canadian pair teams are in action at these World Championships and have qualified for the free program. Lia Pereira (Milton, Ontario) and Trennt Michaud (Trenton, Ontario) are in tenth place with 63.28 points, while Kelly Ann Laurin (Saint-Jérôme, Quebec) and Loucas Éthier (Saint-Alphonse, Quebec) sit in twelfth with a score of 62.30.

It should be noted that the ISU World Figure Skating Championships® is an annual event that showcases the top 200 best athletes from 50 countries in four disciplines: Men, Women, Pairs and Ice Dance.

The 2025 World Championships will mark the United States’ 14th time hosting the event, and a second for Boston. Boston last hosted the World Championships in 2016.

We’re hoping to get more over the weekend and special “Thanks” to Denise for taking the time to not only reply but sending photo’s.
